September 11, 1944, marked the end of a four-and-a-half-year period of oppression for the people of Bettembourg. At around noon, American army tanks launched an assault to finally drive out the German occupiers. A memorial route in Bettembourg highlights the key events of World War II that impacted the town between 1940 and 1945. In the presence of the U.S. Ambassador, Mr. Thomas M. Barrett.
