During the Nazi persecution, nearly 300,000 people with physical or mental disabilities, as well as tuberculosis patients, were killed by starvation, neglect, poison injections or gas. In order to ensure the purity of the German Volkskörper (people's body), hundreds of thousands more were forcibly sterilized, including people living on the margins of society and classified as "asocial".
