Traumnovelle - Theater
During the carnival season, within just 36 hours, the seemingly harmonious marriage of Fridolin and Albertine is turned upside down. Fridolin, a practical doctor, loses himself in the Vienna night, amidst patients and prostitutes, ultimately landing at a clandestine masked ball. Albertine, staying home to look after the child, experiences such adventures only in her dreams and thoughts, which are profound. Their relationship is shaken by sudden desires and wishes, long denied and hidden from each other. In Schnitzler's novella, "no dream is entirely a dream". Fantasies appear as real as reality. The narrative oscillates between the conscious and unconscious, and the vast land in between. "I don't write plays, I write diagnoses," was the credo of this contemporary of Freud. Through his novella, he not only delves into the emotional abysses between two people but also presents a clear-sighted panorama of fin de siècle Vienna's glittering yet hypocritical and morbid society. In this new stage adaptation, director Frank Hoffmann and his ensemble dive deep into Schnitzler's shadow world.
