During this evening, Lynn Orazi (piano), Päivi Kauffmann (flute) and Romain Gross (clarinet) will draw from a repertoire tinged with romanticism and modern music. Max Meyer-Olbersleben (1850-1927) studied piano with Franz Liszt in Weimar. His Fantaisie-Sonate op. 17, dating from 1883, is a fine example of expressive intensity so dear to romantic composers. The second work on the program is the Sonatine in trio op. 85 by the French composer Florent Schmitt (1870-1958). Florent Schmitt composed this sonatine for harpsichord, flute, and clarinet between 1924 and 1935 in the shadow of his fellow students Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. Alec Templeton (1909-1963), blind from birth, had perfect pitch and studied in London at the Royal College of Music and the prestigious Royal Academy of Music. His very entertaining Pocket Size Sonata no.1 dates from 1949. The evening will be concluded with the Carmen Rhapsody for flute, clarinet and piano by Michael Webster, born in 1944 in Berkley.
