In the fall of 2019 and over a period of six weeks, photographer Mathieu Oui fulfilled an old dream: to tour Italy, his "Grand Tour". This led to the first part of a trilogy titled "Escales et Scale". From Trieste to the southernmost provinces of the boot (Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria...) and then back up the western coast, through Naples, Rome, Pisa, and the Cinque Terre, Mathieu Oui made about thirty stops across Italy, traveling by regional trains. This series of images results, with stairs (scale in Italian) as the guiding theme, a true metaphor for the journey, even existence, with its ups and downs.
Author and photographer, Mathieu Oui lives and works in Paris. After multidisciplinary studies, he developed an artistic exploration at the intersection of image and writing.
