This presentation explains both qualitative and quantitative aspects of groundwater. The Luxembourg sandstone is a porous and fractured rock that can easily absorb rainwater in its pore spaces. It is the largest and most important drinking water reservoir in Luxembourg and supplies over 80% of the country's drinking water from groundwater. The rainwater that penetrates the subsoil seeps through the water-permeable Luxembourg sandstone to a water-impermeable layer. At the interface with the surface of the ground, it emerges from the rock as a so-called layer spring. The Syndicat des Eaux du Sud operates 63 springs and 3 wells. The good quality of the groundwater must be preserved. Nitrate deposits and pesticide residues can negatively affect the quality of our groundwater. Certain geological conditions increase the risk of pollution. In order to reduce these and other dangers to our groundwater to a minimum, drinking water protection areas have been designated. This will ensure that the good quality of our drinking water, as the most important foodstuff, will continue to be ensured in the future.
