Fidelity(ies) or Hakimi's Panenka
Inspired by the footballer Achraf Hakimi and the last World Cup in Qatar, this play tells the story of a young and brilliant Moroccan-origin female footballer who, like her illustrious model, wants to play for Morocco rather than the country where she was born and grew up. This choice is incomprehensible to her mother, who chose to emigrate. Where are we really from? And when we are from several places, to whom should our loyalty go? The dual culture, the shifting identity, and transmission are common themes for the Franco-Moroccan director Ali Esmili and the Lebanese-origin author Mona El Yafi. Using the professional football world as a backdrop, they subtly show us that the experience of migration can have several facets. And finally, they ask us: what if we put the word 'loyalty' in the plural, to see?
