Hydrological extremes have been in the news in recent years, including in Belgium. Years of drought and abnormally high temperatures (2018, 2019, 2020, 2022) have been followed by sometimes extreme rainy periods, such as this terrible month of July 2021 with the worst flood in the modern history of Wallonia: 209 municipalities (out of 262) impacted, more than 100,000 people affected, 39 people dead, 9,670 hectares under water, nearly 48,000 buildings (including 45,000 homes) affected or destroyed and costs of around 3 billion euros. Registration required.
