In 1923, after completing his major work The Large Glass, Marcel Duchamp announced that he was leaving art to devote himself to chess. History proved him wrong, but the theme of chess remained omnipresent in his work, first as a pictorial motif (Chess Game, 1910, Chess Players, 1911, King and Queen Surrounded by Swift Nudes, 1912...) and then as a trope to understand the world around him. Coded messages, chess tournaments, giant outdoor chess games... This conference looks back on the interest Duchamp and his contemporaries had in this activity that combines leisure and strategy, a powerful metaphor for class, gender, and power games.
