Actart concert: The Slavic soul
Dumky, plural of Dumka or Duma, Ukrainian melody evoking a nostalgic reverie. Between 1890 and 1891, Dvorák composed this trio where he diverted this initial meaning to compose 6 Dumky to which he added unexpected transitions towards exuberant joy and wild dances.
Completed in the spring of 1944, the Piano Trio No. 2 Op. 67 was born from a double tragedy, national and personal. Shostakovich was completely devastated by the death of his closest friend and deeply affected by stories published in the Soviet press that SS guards at the Treblinka and Majdaenk death camps had forced Jewish prisoners to dig their own graves and dancing on them. This discovery gave rise to the macabre musical imagery that haunts the trio's finale.
From shadow to light, this program transports you to the heart of the Slavic Soul.
