There is chamber music, and there is Schubert's Octet. By its size and its duration, this partition pushes back the walls. Five strings, two woodwinds, one brass: here we have a summary of the symphony orchestra, and this is indeed how this unusual force is used. While Beethoven's Septet, an obvious model, looked more towards the Mazartian serenade, Schubert favors the effects of mass and contrast to create the illusion of a symphony, right down to the impressive storm which opens the finale. This ambition in no way prevents a more intimate poetry, including, at the beginning of the Adagio, a clarinet solo that is truly beautiful.
