The Guardians - Theater
Nasser Djemaï, author, director and director of the Théâtres des Quartiers d'Ivry, near Paris, delivers with Les Gardiennes a dreamlike dive into the lives of elderly people within our collective imagination. The story is built around Rose, aged 80, physically dependent. She practically no longer speaks. She is taken care of by all the neighbors, who live in the same building. Her apartment has become the beating heart of a small, happy female tribe, made up of four old ladies who are devilishly well organized to ensure their survival. In precarious conditions of course, but while preserving their independence and autonomy. When Victoria, Rose's daughter, announces that she wants to place her mother in an EPHAD, to see her more often and be reassured about her state of health, while adding that she wants to sell the apartment, empty the furniture, make works, these are two visions which confront each other. The Guardians, a tragicomedy about isolation, which subtly mixes allegory, fantastic tale and documentary approach, takes a sensitive look at these "Guardians" who deploy on a daily basis all the strategies to avoid the merciless modernity which does not make them any place.
