Julie Wagener: The Things We Carry
Wars, revolutions, socio-economic struggles, ecological disasters, and the general questioning of moral values have always been a major source of inspiration for visual production throughout history. Sifting through a collection of over 1,000 prints dating from the 15th to the 20th century, acquired by the Villa Vauban in 2020, artist Julie Wagener has curated an eclectic selection of works conveying messages still relevant today. By drawing parallels between the past and present, Wagener freely interprets the chosen artworks and their narratives. She projects them into contemporary society to spark discussions on the systems we follow and the lives we lead. By revisiting past concerns and linking them to the 21st-century human condition, this new series of screen prints explores the existential struggles faced by our globalized Western society today and in the coming decades.
