This extraordinary piece tells the story of the career of a young stage artist, beginning at the time of Austria's annexation to Nazi Germany in 1938.
Lola Blau goes into exile in America via Switzerland, becomes famous, loses her illusions and returns to Vienna after the war.
The piece has not lost any of its relevance since its premiere in 1971. The cabaret songs of the great composer, singer and poet Georg Kreisler (1922-2011) span the spectrum from virtuoso comedy to touching tragedy. "Lola Blau" is the story of powerlessness. Lola is just as helpless and powerless in the face of anti-Semitism as she is in the face of her own Jewishness. She is powerless against the stubborn Swiss, rages powerlessly against the sex career in America, and in the end she is powerless again against the Austrian diehards. All she really wants is to dance and sing a little and to please her audience. But she has to realize that it is no use just trying to grab a small, modest place in the sun.
Above all, each person must try to remove the obstacles that block the sun for themselves and their fellow human beings.
Georg Kreisler set standards for literary cabaret. His songs are biting, bizarre and political. They disturb, seduce and shake people up. He detested the pigeonholes he was put in. Cabaret artist? He doesn't think so, he writes in his autobiography. "Hopefully not," he adds.
