Sophie Taeuber-Arp's Dada Heads - Conference
Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889-1943) made her mark on the history of the avant-garde with her abstract, geometric, rhythmic and colourful compositions. Her training at the School of Arts and Crafts in Saint-Gall in Switzerland and then at the Ateliers d'apprenticeship and essay for applied arts in Munich favoured her ability to produce a true synthesis of the arts. Having just graduated, she became a teacher at the School of Applied Arts in Zurich and experimented in the fields of tapestry, drawing, sculpture as well as in those of costume, puppetry and even dance, inspired by the pedagogy of Rudolf van Laban. She took part in the Dadaist adventure and performed masked at the Cabaret Voltaire. Her ironic Tête DADA (1920) affirms the richness of her research, parodies the art of portraiture and appears as an original manifesto of the famous movement.
