1973. The Cold War is still poisoning international relations. The British secret services, like those of other countries, are on maximum alert. Following a failed mission in Hungary, the head of MI6 finds himself on the sidelines with his faithful lieutenant, George Smiley.
Yet Smiley is soon secretly rehired at the behest of the government, which fears that the service has been infiltrated by a Soviet double agent. Supported by young agent Peter Guillam, Smiley attempts to flush out the mole, but is soon caught up in his old ties to a formidable Russian spy, Karla. While the mole's identity remains an enigma, Ricki Tarr, a field agent on an undercover mission in Turkey, falls in love with a married woman, Irina, who claims to have crucial information. Meanwhile, Smiley learns that his former boss has narrowed the list of suspects to five names: the ambitious Percy Alleline, the charming Bill Haydon, the hitherto loyal Roy Bland, the very zealous Toby Esterhase... and Smiley himself.
In a climate of suspicion, manipulation and manhunt, all find themselves playing a dangerous game that could cost them their lives and plunge the world into chaos. The answers lie beyond each person's limits...
