Russia, 1874, the beautiful and ardent Anna Karenina enjoys everything her contemporaries aspire to: married to Karenin, a high-ranking government official with whom she has borne a son, she has achieved eminent social status in St. Petersburg. Upon receiving a letter from her incorrigible seducer brother Oblonsky, begging her to come and help him save his marriage to Dolly, she travels to Moscow. During her journey, she meets Countess Vronsky, whom her son, a charming cavalry officer, comes to meet at the train station. A few brief exchanges are enough to awaken in Anna and Vronsky a mutual attraction. Oblonsky also receives a visit from his best friend Levin, a sensitive and idealistic landowner. Infatuated with Dolly's younger sister, Kitty, he awkwardly proposes to her, but Kitty has eyes only for Vronsky. Devastated, Levin retires to Pokrovskoye and devotes himself entirely to cultivating his land. But Kitty's heart is also broken when she becomes aware, at a grand ball, of Anna and Vronsky's mutual infatuation. Anna, disoriented, returns to Saint Petersburg, but Vronsky follows her there. She strives to resume her quiet family life, but her obsession with the young officer continues to torment her. She then gives herself up to an adulterous relationship that scandalizes the entire local aristocracy. Karenin's status and respectability are jeopardized, leading him to issue an ultimatum to his wife. In her desperate search for happiness, Anna reveals the hypocrisy of a society obsessed with appearances. Unable to renounce her passion, she chooses the heart.
