Industry Days: Trigger Warnings Workshop (LuxFilmFest)
In the age of #MeToo, cinema has become the center of numerous controversies. However, feminists are not the only ones expressing concerns; anti-racist activists, for example, do so as well. How should we address films, directors, and actors who are subject to criticism? How can we avoid the dilemma of either banning films and artists or ignoring social issues in cinema, as if it existed outside society?
Are trigger warnings the solution, or do they merely push away viewers and their objections? While they may be necessary to protect the audience from traumatic exposure, they cannot address all issues. A possible solution lies in contextualization rather than decontextualization.
Films never exist in isolation. Industry professionals always shape the discourse around the works they present. Today, this discourse cannot ignore societal debates and controversies, risking exclusion of part of the audience.
