In his performance "Deathbed," Trajal Harrell combines his memories of Katherine Dunham with the aesthetic relationship to death and the ritual characteristic of butoh. The African-American dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham, known for creating a space for African and Caribbean dance traditions and rituals on stage, traveled the world with her dance company in the 1940s and 1950s. She was also an activist who went on a hunger strike to oppose the expulsion of Haitian refugees by the United States and fought passionately for equal rights in her own country. Trajal Harrell will talk about his research and inspirations for creating this performance.
