The Golden Age of Japanese Prints - Conference
Hosted by Catherine Koenig, a national conference speaker. Under the patronage of the Consulate of Japan.
Ukiyo-e is an artistic movement from the Edo period (1603-1868) mainly represented by woodblock prints. Haruboru, Shunman, Utamaro, Hiroshige, and Hokusai are the masters of the golden age of ukiyo-e. Often itinerant, the painters traveled across Japan sketching peasants going to the market, sumo wrestlers, strollers on the Hokkaido road, women and their children in their notebooks. They captured life with a sure line in a manner quite similar to haiku poetry (a short prose poem that attempts to capture the passage of time and the impermanence of things).
From the drawings in their notebooks, ukiyo-e painters made polychrome woodblock prints that fascinated Western collectors.
