Once or twice a month (always on Tuesdays), the Lëtzebuerg City Bibliothèque invites literary authors to present their novels and read extracts from their works, followed by a discussion with the public and a book signing. On the program for Mardi littéraire on February 4ht: Didier Boudet - Quand le jazz débarque (1944-1954)! Music in freedom!

Beethoven plays a central role in Thomas Mann's latest novel, Doctor Faustus. Musicologist Wendell Kretzschmar's lectures are of crucial importance to the artistic career of the novel's protagonist, composer Adrian Leverkühn, and culminate in an analysis of Beethoven's Piano Sonata Op. 111. And finally, there is Leverkühn's intention to “take up” the Ninth Symphony with its final vocal jubilation in his last work, “Doctor Fausti Wehklag”, to contrast the “Lied an die Freude” with a song of sadness - which of course leads to taking up the withdrawal in turn at the end of this work.

Lecture by Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dieter Borchmeyer.
Piano accompaniment by Amadeus Wiesensee.
