German Study Day
In the 1840s, Richard Wagner composed three "romantic" operas that marked his artistic breakthrough and are among his most frequently performed works today: The Flying Dutchman, Tannhäuser, and Lohengrin. All three operas deal with the tragic connections between earthly destinies and supernatural powers, and reference archetypes from world literature and cultural history. Like Odysseus, the Dutchman wanders the oceans, Tannhäuser vacillates between pagan and Christian redemption, and the Grail Knight Lohengrin's union with an earthly woman fails for lack of questioning. Biographically, these three works represent Wagner's years as Kapellmeister in Dresden, before the composer took to the barricades during the 1848–49 revolution and was forced into exile. It was there that he developed a new aesthetic of musical drama that left behind the Romantic operas.
