Michel Medinger (1941-2025) is one of Luxembourg's most important photographers. Before devoting himself to photography in the 1960s, he initially developed a passion for painting. His artistic practice took off in the 1980s, with the creation of a large body of work.

The exhibition showcases the small photographic compositions Medinger has created since the late 1980s: allegorical representations and contemporary versions of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish vanitas. They embody, with gentle irony, the sentiment of memento mori, recalling the fragility and brevity of human existence.

Michel Medinger's work is distinguished by an aesthetic and plastic quality that is both evocative and derisory, where we encounter unusual objects and banal elements, displaced from their usual context: Cut-out flowers interact with stuffed bird or animal skulls, while still life, the artist's favorite genre, gives life to compositions oscillating between baroque and surrealism. By rearranging the objects, the artist gives them a hybrid appearance, while creating scenes that seem to come straight from a dream or a metaphysical reflection.

In 2024, the exhibition "Michel Medinger – The Order of Things," dedicated to the winner of the Luxembourg Photography Award, was presented as part of the 55th edition of the Rencontres d'Arles. On the occasion of the European Month of Photography (EMOP) 2025, the exhibition at Villa Vauban echoes the Arles exhibition in Luxembourg and pays tribute to the recently deceased artist.
