An emblematic figure of surrealism in Belgium, Paul Delvaux is nevertheless a singular surrealist. Although he associates himself with certain historical events, he has always taken care to maintain his independence from the movement.

The dreamlike atmosphere, the association of heterogeneous elements, the use of myth and metamorphosis, or finally the incongruous presence of naked women in nocturnal landscapes… are undoubtedly characteristics that bring Delvaux closer to surrealism. But the political and protest commitment of the movement leaves him indifferent, as the artist is immersed in his own imagination.

In a universe created from scratch, Delvaux brings together what obsesses him, women, trains, buildings and ancient statues… which together transgress the boundaries of reality and time. Like Magritte, it is his discovery of the metaphysical canvases of Giorgio de Chirico, the precursor of surrealism, who in 1934 tipped his work into the dreamlike and the strange, at the origin of a climate as mysterious as it is poetic, which leaves its mark forever.
