On July 11, 2015, François Schortgen finally put down his brushes. Born on October 11, 1935 in
Esch-sur-Alzette, he discovered painting at the age of 13, a passion that would never fade, even in the face of
to the trials of fatigue and illness. Winner of the 1st Quinquennial Prize for Modern Art in 1983,
François Schortgen has become an emblematic figure of contemporary Luxembourg art thanks to his
non-figurative approach and the philosophical-ecological dimension of his works.
His deep relationship with nature marked his entire artistic approach. Like a character from
Jack London, at the age of 19, did not hesitate to leave for the United States to live for several months in Alaska and in
the Northwest. There, he discovered Inuit and Native American arts which fascinated him and nourished his
imaginary. The vast frozen expanses, beliefs and cultures of indigenous peoples will enrich
his work sustainably, while shamanism will refine his consciousness and his predispositions
visionaries.
Back in Luxembourg, François Schortgen continues his journey, both physical and introspective.
In the 80s, his travels in Asia introduced new influences into his art, those of
calligraphy and Sino-Japanese poetry. The painter then rises beyond the earthly limits, exploring
limbo and depths. His striking paintings immerse viewers in a universe
silent, at once immaculate like the ice floes and arid like the deserts. Through his landscapes, he
celebrates the beauty and power of nature while denouncing the suffering inflicted by humanity,
often through ignorance or greed.
His telluric painting makes him an intercessor between men and nature. By lingering
In front of his paintings, one can almost hear the ice cracking, feel the secret vibrations of the earth.
Each work reflects both the evanescent beauties of the natural world and the profound mysteries of
our human condition. François Schortgen had this unique talent of evoking, with an incisive touch or
with a subtle serif, the memory of cultures and human fragilities. His paintings, often
crossed by a discreet shadow, were sometimes illuminated in their heart by a red dot, symbol of a
wandering soul, reflection of the artist himself, witness to the natural forces that he strove to translate.
François Schortgen conceived his work in three essential stages: the contemplation of
landscapes, meditation on the inner echoes they aroused in him, then sublimation on canvas,
in the manner of a haiku where instantaneous and emotion intertwine. An abstract, lyrical and materialist artist, he
was the conductor of the subtle metamorphoses of nature, where everything is perpetual change.
Traveler and poet, he invited everyone to introspection through his pictorial stories of infinite sensitivity.
François Schortgen, through the richness and depth of his work, undoubtedly continues to guide us.
