When emancipation tries to go hand in hand with love...
Sarah, 32, a cashier, dreams of becoming a teacher and has resumed her studies after having to abandon them as a teenager following the birth of her son Hugo. Hugo left school to work at the age of 16, preferring manual labour to his studies.
Set in a flat in the Paris suburbs, the play reveals, in direct contact with the audience, the day-to-day life of this mother and her son, between sacrifices, compromises and unconditional love. Together, they navigate life's challenges, disagreements and financial difficulties, while trying not to stand in the way of each other's aspirations. A story that is at once brutal, tender and unique.
Known for his spare, poetic writing style, Australian playwright Daniel Keene likes to capture the complexity of human relationships. Sarah & Hugo tackles themes such as resilience, life choices and family relationships with a particular sensitivity and emotional dialogue that underlines the importance of pursuing one's dreams despite the obstacles.
Play written in 2016 during a residency at La Chartreuse de Villeneuve-lez-Avignon - Centre national des écritures du spectacle. Performed in France and French-speaking territories by Séverine Magois.
